Coach
Kev begins his 15th year as coach for Sagebrush Diving, and this will be his
second year coaching HS in the Denver Public School District in Denver,
CO, after taking more than two years away from HS and Club Coaching to serve as a college
Head Swimming and Diving Coach.
He also volunteer coaches the Metro State Club Team, who won the 2011 ECC
(college club) National Diving Championship held in Atlanta, GA, at the beautiful
Georgia Institute of Technology.
Sage, through the Sagebrush Diving club team, in addition to his refinement of his collegiate athletes, has coached more collegiate All-Americans than any other team in Colorado (24 total, with Julia Northrop, 5 NAIA All-American distinctions, Kenny Rhoades, 4 NCAA All-American distinctions, Nick Halbach, 8 NCAA All-American distinctions and 4 NCAA National 1M/3M titles in 2009 and 2011, while setting the all-time NCAA Division III 3-meter national record, Meili Carpenter, 4-time NCAA Division I All-American and 4-time USA Diving Senior National Finalist, 2012 Olympic Trials qualifier, Sarah Moore, 2 NCAA All-American distinctions her freshman year at Mines, and Jesse Dennis, 1 NCAA All-American distinction his junior year at Mines). Sage has been coaching the sport of diving for over 25 years since he began right out of high school, coaching his Alma Mater, Columbus East High School in Columbus, Indiana. Interesting story, the first diver he coached is now the Columbus East High School Coach, Steve Warren (COOL!). He has coached TEN Colorado local high schools (Arvada, Arvada West, Broomfield, Golden, Pomona, Ralston Valley, Standley Lake, Summit, Wheat Ridge, and now, Denver North HS), where most of the divers have set and reset every 6-dive and 11-dive record except for one (Eric Seaver's record for 11-dives at Arvada HS, which is still intact). He recently finished his third year coaching at the Colorado School of Mines (July 2007 thru April 2010), where he actually served proudly as Head Swimming and Diving Coach from April 2008 thru April 2010. In his second year of being the Head Coach, he is proud to say that their coaching staff (which included the talented Asst. Coach Nate Rothman, and volunteer coaches Rick Williamson, Tiffany Forbes, Kelly Rothman-Klein, Advisor Dr. Dave Hale, and Manager Preston Wolfram) helped 5 student-athletes compete at the 2010 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, with all 5 bringing home NCAA All-American honors. (2010 NCAA Student-Athletes were Jesse Dennis-1M/3M, Angel Forsling-200IM/100BR/200BR, Sarah Moore-1M/3M, Kevin Shaw200IM/400IM/200BR, and Andrew Zerwick-100BA/200BA, all placing top 16 at NCAA's in at least one event). More importantly, 4 of those 5 Mines National Team members were also be honored as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans, along with 8 additional teammates who achieved Academic Honorable Mention, for a total of 12 CSCAA Scholar All-Americans. Capping off that second season was his coaching highlight, when Colorado School of Mines' MEN team finished as the TEAM SCHOLAR NATIONAL CHAMPION based on average GPA of all participating members. This was the first time any team achieved this title in Colorado School of Mines history. In this new millennium since the 1999-2000 season, Mines Swimming and Diving had only had three student-athletes achieve this academic honor, so 12 in one season is quite remarkable. Freshman diver Sarah Moore finished 5th on 3M, and 15th on 1M (achieving both athletic and academic All-American honors), while junior Jesse Dennis finished 14th on 1M and 17th on 3M (achieving Honorable Mention All-American athletically, but EASILY achieving his first Scholar All-American distinction with his cumulative 3.8 GPA after three years at Mines). In February 2008, Sage was promoted from Assistant Coach to interim Head Swimming and Diving Coach at Colorado School of Mines after three of his divers achieved "B" cuts and qualified to 2008 NCAA Division II Nationals (Chandra Lippitt who graduated Spring 2008 as an NCAA Division II Academic All-American; Christopher Moore, who had no previous diving experience before joining the Mines diving team in the Fall of 2007, but he played Lacrosse in HS... that counts!!! Moore went on to qualify for 2009 NCAA Championships, but couldn't participate due to a serious injury; and finally Simon Demby-Myers, who just missed making finals on 3M in 2008). Sage coached the Metro State Roadrunner Men's and Women's diving teams for three years, where two of his varsity divers (Kenny Rhoades and Chelsea Bates) qualified for the 2007 Division II NCAA Nationals, held in Buffalo, NY, in March 2007. Rhoades finished as NCAA National Runner-up on 3-meter, and 6th on 1-meter, earning two NCAA All-American distinctions, and in the process, reset all of the Metro State Men's Diving records in his freshman season. Bates finished as the 1-meter record-holder for 6-dives at Metro State, before transferring away from Metro State just before Nationals to pursue her Christian Contemporary music career. Sage spent one month in the 2005-06 season coaching the CU Club Diving Team. He also spent one season coaching the University of Denver Men's and Women's diving teams, where the women scored the most team points in DU's history (at the time) at the 2003 Sun Belt Conference Swimming and Diving Championships and reset the school record for 1-meter (6-dives) twice, while two of the women finished the season within 13 points of the school record on 3M (Keelan Smith went on to capture the 3M 11-dive record during the next season). Before that season, Sage was named Colorado's Diving Coach of the Year for both the Boys (5A) and Girls (4A) in 2000, and had been nominated at virtually every HS State Championship for the honor while he was coaching the high school teams in and near Jefferson County in Colorado. His goal is to elevate the fun and excitement in the sport, and provide a top-quality diving program for divers of all levels. He is the only coach in Colorado who is a certified master spotter by USA Diving (mats, dryboard, 1M and 3M wetboard, trampoline, and dry platform), and subsequently, is certified as a USA Diving Regional Instructor Trainer in all courses, conducting all courses in the RMDA, and filling in throughout the USA when needed, mostly in Arizona, Nevada (Las Vegas), and Nebraska. He recently achieved his 2nd Master-level distinction in May 2008 in a USA Diving-sponsored trip to the Ft. Lauderdale AT&T Grand Prix. He is currently the Training and Education Chair of the Rocky Mountain Diving Association (since 2000), was the meet director for the following USA Diving Region 6 Diving Championships: Summer 2001, Spring and Summer 2004, Summer 2007, and Spring 2009, is a member of the United States Professional Diving Coaches Association, and a Lifetime Coach Member of our National Governing Body, USA Diving. Finally, Coach Kev is the first AAU Colorado Sport Director for Diving (a position he currently holds) in the new American Amateur Union (AAU Diving), an organization which re-instated Diving as a sanctioned sport in late 2005. He was the meet director for the following AAU Colorado District Diving Championships: 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2011. Finally, during all the years that he coached at both Metro State and Mines, he was the swimming AND diving meet director for all the dual meets and championship meets that the schools hosted, and recently was the meet director for the 2011 ECC Nationals Diving meet at Georgia Tech in Atlanta (first time college club nationals has seen a diving event), and was the meet director and meet manager of swimming and diving at the 2010 RMAC Swimming and Diving Championships at (where else?) George Meyers Pool in Arvada, CO. |
