Boulder Valley Diving Invite  (Varsity Diving Complete Results)                  March 20, 2004

Meet SummaryPerfect weather, not a cloud in the sky, no wind, and simply a perfect day for diving (of course, the diving well is indoors, so none of that really matters).  Seven varsity divers and two JV divers represented their schools in a meet where the diving meet record was eclipsed by at least two divers, and the top three divers set  new school records.  The meet started with two rounds of 7's and 8's by 4 of the top 5 divers.  Bryce Engstrom and Cassidy Lynch had a clear edge (6.5-8's), while Ben Raznick gave Matt Pomeroy and Brandon Cook a head start by overshooting his first dive (401b for 3.5-5.5), while Pomeroy and Cook received nothing but 6's to 8.5's.  After that, Raznick couldn't make up the difference with the two leaders, but averaged 6's and 7's the rest of the way to easily place 3rd, setting the Boulder HS school record and achieving his first Consideration All-American score of the young season.  Raznick's best dives were his 403b, 405c, 203b, while he struggled only on his 401b (get this, his scores were 3.5, 4, 5, 5.5, and 7.5!!!)... somebody liked it!  Cook and Pomeroy were pretty much neck-to-neck, if it weren't for a break on Pomeroy's 7th dive, a 303b (leaving him with only 2's), and his 10th dive, a 5233d, which was well-executed but his toes tapped the diving board (leaving him with only 2's).  Cook's best dives were his 105c and 403c (6's-8's), and only struggled on all three of his twisting dives (3.5's to 5.5's).  Pomeroy's best dives were his 403b and 105b (mostly 6's), while obviously struggling on his 303b and 5233d.  Bobby Groesbeck's best dive of the day was his 104c (hit it for 4.5-5's), but struggled on his 5132d and 105c, leaving him in 6th place, while Dallas Smith put in his 201c and 401c (4's and 5's), but struggled with the rest of his list on his way to placing 7th.

More on Lynch and EngstromEngstrom led for much of the way, with his best dives.. well, all of them held 7's or higher, with the exception of his 305c (5-5.5's), and his last dive 405c (5-5.5's).  I will highlight two of his dives... first, his 5233d oscillated a little too much and his right foot moved on his last oscillation, which probably affected his score, but it was an incredible dive nonetheless (I believe with a more "pure" start, he would have held 8's).  And then, 301b!!!  The scores sum it up... 9.5, 9.5, 9.5, 9.0, and 9.5.  Nearly flawless.  Lynch held 8.5's on 5 of his first 10 dives to virtually tie things up going into the last round with Engstrom (the score had Lynch 0.1 pts ahead at 449.55 to 449.45), and then he sealed the deal with his "money" dive, a 305c for 7.5's.  Both divers were all smiles after the event, capping off a meet that lasted less than two hours with lunch at Subway (where's Taco Bell in Boulder?)...

Boulder Valley Diving Invite  (Junior Varsity Diving)

Summary:  All I can say is, this would have been a contest had Michael Bennett listed dive 5221d as his first dive (it was supposed to be a 202a, unfortunately).  Evan Kaverman used his consistency to wrap up the JV title, scoring 4's and 5's on all six of his dives, while Bennett started with the "incorrect dive" or "zero dive," whatever the rule book says you are supposed to call it, and finished with mostly 3's to 4.5's.

Place Name School 6-dive score
1 Evan Kaverman Broomfield 115.75 pts
2 Michael Bennett Longmont 84.45 pts
